Summer project tasks
Complete the following tasks on a blogpost on your coursework blog called 'Summer Project: coursework planning':

1) Research: Film trailer analysis

You need to write detailed 250-word close-textual analyses of six film trailers in your chosen genre. For each film trailer, focus on a different aspect of media language, and embed each one on your blog:

Film trailer 1: Narrative and genre   The Wolf Of Wall Street
How is narrative and genre communicated quickly and clearly to the audience?   the genre i have chosen does reflect the coming of age as in the trailer it demonstrates the narrative as its shown at the start a man who gets approached by someone who wants to work for him after telling him how much he earns. at this point that is where their lives change as they become more wealthy and more powerful everyday. also, the narrative shows their success and how they're impacting other peoples lives whether its for the good  or bad. in addition, at the start of the trailer he questions the man about this car and then offered to quit his job which reflects some sort of risk but intentions of a better life. the film shows a group of stock traders change in life everyday and the things that they get up to from their transition of being poor to  rich.

Film trailer 2: Mise-en-scene  American Gangster
What do you notice about the use of mise-en-scene to create meanings for the audience? Think CLAMPS.

in american gangster the actors wear suits and formal wear although they are committing crimes on a daily. also, the environment that they started off in was a poor neighbourhood but they still dressed formally and smartly. although he was a man amongst boys through out most of his adult life in terms of success, both legal and illegal they would still be formal and respectable. compared to recent films on films like this are completely the opposite as they do not dress formally and spend money on silly things. this film shows how a person from an outcast can make it whether its good or bad and he brought his family into the businesses and looked after his family. Boyz in the hood was made before this film as it displays the opposite in most aspects between both films as they didnt dress formally but wore flashy clothes although both films are from the nearly the same setting. clothing was more urban in boyz in the hood as they were younger compared to american gangster as they wore classy clothes, therefore the upbringings were different as one was based in new york and the other in krenchu mafia. for example, people in boys in the hood wore t shirts jumpers gold chains with flashy cars e.t.c whereas, in american gangster they were fressed formally thorugh most of the film and didn't wear flashy chains and urban clothes but only tailor made suits showing their wealth and power.

Film trailer 3: Camerawork  Paid in Full
Here you are looking for particular camera shots and movement. E.g. Are close-ups used to introduce key characters to the audience? How are establishing shots used?  in paid in full there's a scene where mitch is in prison, the camera has a close up of a new character called rico, this is an enigma code which demonstrates that he'll be a main character for this film. During that scene there was various camera angles which shows how intense the situation is until the fight kicks off. for example, there's shot reverse shot of a male trying to argue with mitch and close ups of facial expressions which shows aggression and tension. as soon as the fight happens the new character joins in to help mitch and this was introduced by a tracking shot which makes us focus on what hes going to do whether its to help mitch or not.

Film trailer 4: Editingt  Scot Pilgraim
Analyse pace, transitions, number of shots and juxtaposition e.g. eyeline matches. Does the pace speed up towards the end of the trailer?   during this film he fights various people, at some points in the action it speeds up or down to create more tension and makes us concentrate even more as it leads on to more action and makes us wonder if he'll get defeated or not. towards the end of the trailer there's a montage of everyone he's going to fight and the speed increases which could reflect on his heart beat at the current moment as hes panicking and how tense it can be. from 1 minute 29 seconds thats where it all starts as he becomes in love with the girl and its the start of his journey. the action filled music displays its going to be a long and pain experience to win this girl. the pace at the start of the trailer is normal as its explaining whats going on which reflects how calm and peaceful things are whereas in the middle it all turns to the worse as the pace increases and more action occurs.

Film trailer 5: Sound  8 mile
Analyse both diegetic and non-diegetic sound - music, dialogue, voiceover, SFX, background or foley sound etc.
in the trailer for 8 mile the non digetic sound of the music towards the middle builds up as the beat and montage sync and the voice over starts when hes actually singing during the film so the film and song link. the voice over at the start of some parts do overlay into tjhe actual footage which goes from non digetic to diegtic sound. the dialogue portrayed in this makes us think hes living in a bad place, he has no hope but towards the middle his friend says hes going to help him come on top with him. the lyrics in the non diegtic music is him talking about his life and how he has one chance to get it and if you cant keep up with it you wont have another chance.Film trailer 6: Trailer conventions, intertextuality, graphics, text-on-screen etc. Scott Pilgrim
Here you need to explore trailer conventions and intertextuality - what does this trailer have that you've spotted in all the trailers you have analysed so far? Are there any intertextual references? Look at conventions, text on screen, graphics, title, release date, social media links and more.
during the trailer there's alot of comic graphics which makes this trailer creative and gives a message that its a type of thing that'll only happen in comics. this trailer like most trailers have a montage in it which displays whats the occuring events that will come in the film and the speed of the trailer demostrates which type of film it'll be. for exmaple, this has a slow start and builds up to be fast paced which results to alot of action which will come up. this is the same with wolf of wall street.
2) Planning: Film pitch

Here you need to plan your own film idea that will form the basis of your trailer and posters. This means developing a complete film pitch that outlines the narrative, characters and more.

Complete this film pitch template (you can copy the questions into your blog or complete on Word and link from your blog) to demonstrate you have planned a complete feature film in your chosen genre.

Title: above and beyond

Tagline: one foot in one foot out or whats your court?

Genre (and sub-genre/hybrid genre if applicable):  coming of age

Logline – one sentence that sums up the film and hooks people in (25 words or fewer): different paths different endings

Other successful films that are similar to yours: coach carter

Narrative structure – what happens in the film and in what order: have to choice between the roads or basketball and different options will lead to different problems or successes.  couple friends who are in the same school plan to play basketball for their school but there's requirements. as they're all from the urban area theyre exposed to crime and danger. there's only one way to get out of the hood or you either stay in and learn to survive. they will get taught life lessons on how to be good and to succeed whereas some dont listen and chosen the wrong path.

Hero/heroine, their desires, the conflicts they encounter etc.:  the drug dealers and thief's(bad) school/coach (good). whether or not the hood life is worth it or vice versa as they need to survive.
Other characters, their narrative role and their audience appeal: their friends

Target audience for your film (age, gender, social class, interests etc.): all ages C1 AB

3) Statement of Intent

Write your genuine 500-word Statement of Intent. This will be submitted to the exam board alongside your media products and is worth 10 marks of the overall 60 marks available.

Guidance is provided by AQA in their NEA Student Booklet but we strongly recommend you also look at our Statement of Intent suggested questions document too.
im planing to make a 1-2min production and i will try to show how an average person from an urban environment whos trying to make it into a sports career basketball. although, hes surrounded by bad people who do things which are illegal, hes trying to live a good life and avoid all problems of such. this will be shown by their attitudes and way of speaking which will be through diegetic sound and mise en scene which will show how successful their lifestyle of criminal activities have done. although, his background stops him from searching for his success hes determined to prove everyone wrong and make it out of the "hood".   this will show how stereotypes aren't also right as people do try escape certain environment to have a better life and that people who are in certain environments get treated differently.

this opening scene starts in a school where he goes towards a basketball court and gets stopped by some "roadmen" who know. they try encourage him to become a bad life as thats the only way to live in the urban city. however, he declines their offer although they put him down. i will be using non diegetic music which will be urban music at a low volume as there'll be diegetic sound of the characters talking. whilst hes walking there'll be an over the shoulder shot that will show the people on the side and their movements. whilst they talk i will add a shot reverse shot.

he keeps training and  becomes better and better. from practising his skills, layups, shots everything just to become someone and make it out of the hood. when hes training i will use non diegetic sound (motivational urban music maybe meekmill) and this will be presented in a montage form.

the idea of this is to represent that the "hood" is shown to lead you in one way which is a bad lifestyle and no matter how hard you  try it wont be possible to escape. however, this displays a persons motivation to chase his goal and succeed in life and he grinds everyday to practise to show his talent. after, proving himself he finally makes it. this shows that no matter who puts you down and your limitations in life, you can still be able to achieve what u want if u work hard for it.

4) Ignite presentation

Prepare a 5-minute, 20-slide presentation using the Ignite format in which you present your coursework project. In effect, this is your statement of intent in presentation format. You must cover:

  • Your film idea: title, tagline, genre, narrative etc.
  • Media language: how you will use conventions, camerawork, editing, mise-en-scene and sound to create an effective trailer and film posters.
  • Media representations: how you will use or subvert stereotypes; representation theory.
  • Media audiences: your target audience demographics and psychographics; audience pleasures; audience theory.
  • Media industries and digital convergence: the potential companies or organisations that could fund or distribute your film; how your trailer and posters will use new and digital media and digital convergence to create an effective campaign.
Ignite presentations have very specific rules: you must create exactly 20 slides with each slide set to 15-second auto-advance. This means your presentation will be exactly five minutes followed by questions and comments from the class. You will deliver your presentation on your coursework planning in the first week back in September.

You can find more information about Ignite presentations - including examples - in this Ignite presentation blogpost here.

Summer project deadline: all tasks above due in first lesson back in September
